X-Men’s Worst Movie Surprisingly Helped The MCU In A Big Way

Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine in the MCU’s Deadpool 3, a major event that would have not been possible without the worst X-Men movie.

Key Release Dates

Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, a major event not only for the Deadpool franchise but for the MCU as a whole. As the X-Men-related MCU project to hit the big screen, Deadpool 3 is not expected to be a reboot of some sort but rather a continuation of the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool saga. Granted, given how Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall, going from the X-Men series at Fox to the MCU’s Phase 5 probably will not mean much for Wade Wilson. Still, Wolverine in Deadpool 3 means that Hugh Jackman is now in the MCU, too.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The news that Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine now in an MCU movie was one of the biggest pop culture moments of 2022, as the idea of Jackman’s Wolverine in the MCU always seemed unlikely. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was the main character in the Fox X-Men franchise, and by the time Disney acquired Fox, Jackman had already retired from the role with Logan. As iconic as Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine was, it seemed like the circumstances would never allow for the (so far) only live-action Wolverine to interact with other MCU characters. Thanks to Deadpool, that has changed.

Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman Met Thanks To X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman met on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The first Wolverine solo movie saw Hugh Jackman playing Logan for the fourth time after leading the first X-Men trilogy, and it featured a few important mutants who had never appeared in live-action before. One of those was Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, who was played by Ryan Reynolds. X-Men Origins: Wolverine may have been the worst X-Men movie, but it was also the beginning of a friendship between Reynolds and Jackman that has now led to Wolverine’s appearance in Deadpool 3. 15 years after X-Men Origins, Wolverine and Deadpool will finally meet again.

Hugh Jackman has said that Logan, which ended with Wolverine’s death, would be his final time playing the iconic X-Men. According to Jackman (via Variety), Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is what first made him reconsider his retirement from the Wolverine role. The idea of Wolverine interacting with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in a movie sounded as exciting for Hugh Jackman as it does for the audiences, yet Deadpool premiered when Logan was already in production. Though Wolverine and Deadpool often team up in the comics, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds’ friendship transcends their respective characters and is one of the main reasons why Jackman’s Wolverine will return in Deadpool 3.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s Fiasco Led To Reynolds & Jackman’s Reunion In Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a critical and commercial failure. In addition, X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s take on Deadpool is arguably one of the worst adaptations of a comic book character ever put to screen. Deadpool, known for his loud mouth, had his mouth sealed and became a random supervillain for Wolverine to fight in the end. Compared to the Deadpool Ryan Reynolds got to play in 2016, X-Men Origins’ Deadpool was a completely different character. However, without the X-Men Origins’ Deadpool fiasco, Reynolds would have likely never made Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Without X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Wolverine in Deadpool 3 would have never happened.
