The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie will feature one major cameo from a famous D&D player, reveals co-director Jonathan Goldstein. Created in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson as a fantasy tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons is now played by over 40 million fans and frequently live-streamed on the Internet. The property was first brought to the big screen in 2000, though that film flopped at the box office and was panned by critics.
Paramount’s upcoming reboot is shaping up to be a lot more promising as a potential franchise. Star Trek’s Chris Pine leads the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves cast as a Bard named Elgin alongside the Fast & Furious franchise’s Michelle Rodriguez, Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page, Jurassic World’s Justice Smith, It’s Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant as the main villain, a Rogue named Forge Fletcher. Based on the popular D&D campaign setting known as the Forgotten Realms, the Honor Among Thieves movie is written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the duo known for helming Game Night and penning Horrible Bosses and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
During the Dungeons & Dragons movie’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, which Screen Rant attended, Goldstein shared some exciting news about the upcoming adaptation. The Honor Among Thieves co-director revealed that the fantasy film will feature „at least“ one cameo from a celebrity D&D player, although he and Daley declined to provide any further details, to no surprise. Read what Goldstein shared below:
„There is at least one cameo from a well-known, well-liked D&D player.“
In terms of who the surprise cameo may be, two plain and clear possibilities should immediately come to mind. Vin Diesel is perhaps the most famous D&D fan alive and it just so happens that his longtime Fast & Furious co-star, Michelle Rodriguez, stars in Honor Among Thieves and has mentioned in multiple interviews that she has tried to get Diesel to appear in the movie. Another obvious choice would be Justice League’s Joe Manganiello, who runs a popular D&D game for Hollywood stars and tried for years to get the ball rolling on a D&D movie to no avail. Having Manganiello cameo would act as a recognition of his efforts.
While Diesel and Manganiello are the more obvious choices, The Late Show host Stephen Colbert is a another possibility. The comedian is an avid D&D player who has also shown his willingness to cameo in the past, as he appeared briefly in The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies because of his well-known Tolkien fandom, and the new Dungeons & Dragons movie is even shaping up to be a fun and goofy twist on Lord of Rings. Goldstein did say there will be „at least“ one cameo from a famous D&D player, meaning fans could potentially see an appearance from all three when Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves releases in theaters next year.
