Halloween Ends will premiere on October 14, 2022, and although it is not the last movie of the franchise, it is the final movie of Blumhouse’s trilogy. The iconic slasher movie has thirteen titles that follow the legacy of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, and audiences always get in line to be scared by their newest film.
Jamie Lee Curtis won the title of „Scream Queen“ after her several appearances in horror movies, but although she achieved making audiences scream along with her, nobody among the audience members has reportedly fainted in any of her films. Making people feel so scared that viewers faint is a record only a few movies have achieved, and these horror movies made history by scaring viewers that badly.
Psycho (1960)
According to Salon, there were newspapers that reported in the early ’60s that people had fainted in Alfreds Hitchcock’s most acclaimed movie, Psycho. The scene is not particularly scary for people today, but back then, it sure made people drop to the ground in horror.
The legendary scene where Marion Crane is stabbed in the shower was too shocking in the ’60s, even though the black and white color film had softened the shocking aspects of seeing red blood (which was actually chocolate syrup, according to BFI). It was not common to see a murder depicted with such detail, although compared to today’s slasher movies, it may even seem eye-friendly.
The Exorcist (1973)
The Exorcist is considered the best classic horror movie because it was the first one to do many things that would later become horror canon. Before its release, no other movie had centered around an exorcism, and it is fair to say, after all this time, no other movie has made such a disturbing and horrific depiction of it.
The movie is scandalous, grotesque, and horrifying, and although these traits do not usually result in a critically acclaimed film, The Exorcist was made with such great cinematography that it still holds up today as one of the most important movies in the history of cinema. The audience reactions, in which people cried, shivered and fainted prove how groundbreaking it was.
Alien (1979)
When the iconic chest-burster scene in Alien was filmed, the movie director decided to not tell the cast that a terrifying and bloody alien would come out of the character’s chest in order to record real reactions from the crew. This led actress Veronica Cartwright to faint when the scene was shot, according to the Independant.
iHorror also tells of the audience in movie theaters that fell victim to the shocking scene. For this and many other reasons, it’s little onder that Alien is one of the most rewatchable Ridley Scott movies.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
When The Blair Witch Project was released audiences were really scared because it is one of the movies people thought were based on true events. Therefore everyone was afraid that the witch was real and that it was out there waiting for its next victims, which is quite hilarious.
Nevertheless, it is understandable that people thought the film was based on true events given that it is recorded as if it was a documentary. This same handheld format made it look like a plausible documentary but also had other effects on viewers who, according to The Washington Post, felt really sick and dizzy after watching the film.
Saw III (2006)
Saw has always been famous for its twisted, and gory depictions of torture and murder, but it was still a surprise when it made more than a few people faint in different cities (according to BBC), It even became a concerning problem that on a single Friday night three ambulances had to be used for the weak of the heart who watched the film in the movie theater.
Most viewers go to see horror movies to find amusement in being scared, but if some know how easily they can be terrified, it is recommended that they skip movies that are famous for being horrifying. After all, it was the third title of the famous franchise, and they had been warned with its previous movies.
Asylum Blackout (2011)
Festivals are always the favorite place for moviegoers to faint, and according to Deadline, two did in the acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival while watching Asylum Blackout.
Asylums are often used in horror movies as a good scary setting and villainous characters but it seems Asylum Blackout took it to a whole new level. The movie isn’t short on the torture (both physical and psychological), and the gore. In fact, there is even a horrific scene involving cannibalism.
V/H/S (2012)
„Found footage“ films such as this one can be harder to watch for some audiences. They require stomach strength, not necessarily for their gruesome scenes, but because it is hard to watch a movie with so much movement.
According to Deadline, another movie was guilty of making a member of the movie theater faint and require medical attention, and that film was the fake found footage movie V/H/S. The movie was not as successful and popular as the next titles of its franchise, but it had clever scary stories and even more horrifying visuals.
Goodnight Mommy (2014)
Goodnight Mommy was acclaimed by audiences all around the world and has been recognized as one of the best foreign horror movies of all time. The movie does not go for gory scenes, or cheap jump scares, but instead builds its horror on effective spine-chilling imagery that, according to Indiewire, made people pass out.
The movie is nerve-wracking and has a supreme way of building up suspense that creeps under the skin. However, it should not be expected to be frequently screaming out of fear, but in a constant unease that proves this film is great at its psychological horror.
Raw (2016)
For most, Raw was not scary, but grotesque in a clever way, and according to Inverse, it made people pass out. It is another foreign movie that should not be seen with expectations of jumpscares and trite horror narrative, but a well-developed story that plays with the limits of strong imagery and alimentary concepts.
Raw deepens the concept of flesh in terms of sexuality and cannibalism, using very provocative scenes that are not for people who get easily shocked. It is a difficult movie to watch, but if viewers have enough strength to not faint, maybe they’ll agree with the positive review of most critics.
Titane (2021)
The same director of Raw, Julia Dicournau, achieved the same effects with Titane, and according to BGR, made people pass out with the film. As she proved with her other horror movie, she is not afraid of exploiting deep disturbing narratives with compelling and shocking visuals that altogether, may be too strong for some viewers.
Dicournau is known to be visceral, dark, and show disgusting imagery. Her mixture of psychological and body horror is always impressive, therefore, people should think twice before entering one of her acclaimed films.
